Invisalign FAQs
Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions.
-
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses a series of clear, custom-fitted aligners to gradually straighten your teeth without metal wires or brackets.
During your consultation, 3D computer imaging helps us create a treatment plan tailored to your smile. A series of custom aligners is then made to fit your teeth at each stage of the Invisalign process.
-
How does the Invisalign process work?
Invisalign clear aligners gradually move your teeth in small increments throughout your treatment. Each aligner is worn for a set number of days (usually around two weeks) before being replaced by the next in the series.
This process continues until your teeth reach their planned positions, with the total treatment time determined by your dentist based on your individual needs.
-
How long does Invisalign treatment take?
Your dentist will determine the length of your Invisalign treatment based on your individual needs.
Factors that can influence treatment time include the alignment of your teeth and jaw, your bite, and the amount of movement required to achieve the desired result.
-
What are Invisalign aligners made of?
The Invisalign aligners are made from USP Class VI medical-grade, high-molecular-weight polyurethane resins. They are BPA free.
-
How often do I have to visit the dentist?
Brief appointments are typically scheduled every four to six weeks so your dentist can review your progress, check your overall oral health, answer any questions, and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment.
Because Invisalign aligners don’t need to be tightened, you simply switch to the next set as directed by your dentist, you don't need to visit the dentist as frequently with Invisalign as you do with braces.
-
What are the primary features of Invisalign?
Invisalign has several features including:
- A discreet, low-profile appearance
- Smooth construction for enhanced comfort
- No adjustment appointments
- Removable for eating, brushing and flossing
-
How much does Invisalign cost?
The cost will vary based on how severe your case is and how long your treatment lasts. For example, the more severe the malocclusion, the more aligners you'll need, and the higher your treatment costs will be.
In many cases, the cost of Invisalign is comparable to that of traditional orthodontic treatment (braces).
-
What financing options do you offer?
We provide flexible financing options to help you with your Invisalign treatment journey. Speak to your dentist or click here to learn more.
-
How will Invisalign fit my lifestyle?
Invisalign fits comfortably into your daily routine, allowing you to easily remove your aligners whenever you need to eat, drink, brush, or floss. This means there are no worries about dietary restrictions, and you can keep up with your oral hygiene in a thorough and consistent way.
-
Are there any food or drink restrictions?
Invisalign aligners can be removed, allowing you to eat and enjoy your favourite foods without restrictions.
To help prevent staining the aligners and protect your teeth, we recommend removing them when drinking anything other than plain water.
-
How many sets of aligners will I need?
The number of aligners you might require depends on how severe your misalignment is. Your dentist can give you a precise estimate after examining your teeth during an initial consultation.
-
Can adults use Invisalign?
Yes! Anyone with healthy teeth and gums can be a potential candidate for Invisalign.
More and more adults are deciding to undergo orthodontic treatment these days, in large part because options like Invisalign have become available.
-
Can teenagers use Invisalign?
Yes! Teens can certainly be candidates for Invisalign. In fact, Invisalign has created a line of aligners to meet the unique needs of teenagers.
Invisalign Teen aligners have compliance indicators on them (small blue dots that fade away after the aligners have been worn enough) to help teens stay on track with their treatment.
They also feature eruption tabs that create space for second molars and help prevent misalignment.
-
How often do I have to change my Invisalign aligners?
Most patients typically change their aligners roughly every two weeks. Your dentist will give you tailored advice on how often to switch aligners according to your treatment plan.
-
How do I clean my aligners?
Proper care of your Invisalign aligners is essential for maintaining your oral health and extending the lifespan of the aligners.
Rinse your aligners each time you remove them to remove saliva and plaque that can cause decay and bad breath.
Always brush and floss your teeth before re-inserting your aligners to prevent food debris and bacteria from trapping between your teeth and aligners, which can lead to cavities and dental issues.
You can also clean your aligners with a clear antibacterial soap to keep them fresh, transparent, and free of bacteria.
Gently brush to prevent scratches, then rinse before putting them back in.
For a deeper clean, soak them using denture cleaner, Retainer Brite, or Invisalign cleaning crystals as needed.
-
Can I play sports with Invisalign?
Invisalign aligners are removable, so you can participate in sports without worrying about damaging them. However, because aligners should be worn for at least 22 hours a day, it’s important to manage your time carefully.
It is also recommended to use a sports mouth guard to protect your teeth, as orthodontic treatment can cause slight tooth movement, making them more susceptible to injury.
-
Can I play my instrument with Invisalign?
Yes! Just take out your aligners if you need to practice your instrument, and put them back in when you're finished.
-
How do I store my aligners?
Your Invisalign aligners come with a case, and you should store them there whenever you remove them to keep them safe. Since the aligners are made of plastic, avoid leaving them in hot places, as heat can cause them to warp or melt.
